The Future of Music?

Ólafur Arnalds is the most.

In a world where gibberish is an acceptable form of lyrics, it’s satisfying to know that there are some musicians out there that have given up complete hope for them and left it as an instrumental. Maybe that isn’t the plan behind Ólafur Arnalds’ brilliant compositions, but hey, who knows? Am I right? I’m right.

Anywho, Ólafur Arnalds has really got something going on here. He’s from Iceland, so you know he’s crazy in a good way. He has a chamber orchestra feel with hints of electronica and some pop-driven elements. It’s really like nothing else I’ve ever heard before, I’m sure you’ll feel the same. He gained a larger following when he opened up for Sigur Rós, so hopefully his eery/beautiful music will fill up more ears. He also did a cover of a Death Cab for Cutie song which is unbelievable.

I love his website, because it’s so engaging (check out the Myspace too). He has a video log and interactive tour dates (where you can leave your comments and pictures, you know, cool stuff). There are a few music videos up there too, but I only wanted to post one, so I chose one of my favorite song’s video “3055”. Also below is my MOST favorite song 0040.

So if you are listening Ólafur, just know that you are the most. And please come to NYC.

P.S. - He released his newest album “…And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness” and it’s really a testament to his talent.

Introducing: Blue Sky Black Death

Sometimes in the world, you can’t always get what you want, this lady knows what I’m talkin about! Anyway, the point is life isn’t fair. On the flip-side of that, sometimes you get exactly what you want! I nearly lost my shit when I first listened to Blue Sky Black Death, a San Francisco-based electronic/instrumental duo (Kingston and Young God). I’ve had their newest release Third Party for about a week now, and they are already an installation in my permanent rotation.

Granted, I don’t quite understand the lyrics to the fullest extent - Your common cold is my Trojan horse to feed - (?!) (From Carl Sagan, Track 1). Don’t try Googling that btw, you’ll just be annoyed at how the internet can’t keep up with your underground interest in music. Why are you so behind Google?!?! WHY!!?

::ahem::

Back to BSBD. Blue Sky Black Death’s unique sound is like if you take the bizarreness out of Bjork’s calmer songs, and mixed it with relaxing smooth melodies of Animal Collective. Mix that in with occasional eery vocals and ponderous lyrics (some songs are solely instrumental, and sometimes we don’t know what the instrument is to begin with). The band’s history is almost exclusively abstract hip-hop, but this album is a synth-pop dream.

BSBD is signed to Fake Four Inc., so back off blood-sucking record labels trying to steal someone else’s candy, just ask this maniac. No, don’t he’s a psycho, in a Joaquin Phoenix sort of way. So give them a listen. Below is my personal favorite Institution (Track 5), and the music video & free download for Carl Sagan (Track 1).

Cover: Robyn does Bjork

Staying true to her style, Robyn covered Bjørks “Hyperballad” at the Polar Music Prize ceremony.  And I must admit, it’s absolutely fantastic (so much so that she should put it on Body Talk Pt 3).  Despite some critics saying Robyn doesn’t live up to Bjork’s voice & talent (duh, she gave it her own twist), I think this is a great rendition to the talented and often oddly dressed Icelandic singer.  How do you think Robyn did?

Introducing…Phildel

I listen to my Twitter fans.  Though I may not be on there much, or tweet a lot, I do watch to see who is following me. Recently, Phildel in London began following my Tweets and so I checked out her music.

If I had to make comparisons, I would say Phildel is a delightful blend of Regina Spektor, Enya, Imogen Heap and Bjork.  All of who are favorites of mine and have been featured on Wonky Pop.  But if you really listen to Phildel, she has her own sound amongst these great artists.

Her latest EP “Tales From the Moonsea” is eerily beautiful.  Songs such as “Storm Song” & “The Dream” grabbed my attention instantly.  I definitely feel that Phildel is one to watch.  Her EP and her instrumental album “Qi” are both available on iTunes (dang, my first purchase on iTunes in almost a year! - no legalsounds as of yet).  Thank you, Phildel for sharing your great gift!

Thirsty Thursday’s Video of the Day

This is the second single from Lights from her self titled debut album.  I can’t quite put my finger on it.. but she is very reminiscent of other pop singers from the early 90’s that tried experimenting with synth and keyboards, but failed miserably.  She actually achieved a synth-pop sound and I dig it.  I just read that her legal name is “Lights” (the 23 year old hailing from Canada actually changed it from Valerie Anne Poxietner) and she’s touring with Owl City.  Her sound is said to be influence by the likes of Abba, BjorkPhil Collins.  She definitely fits into the realm of Wonky Pop (the musical genre) and that’s why her latest video “Second Go” is the Thirsty Thursday video of the day.  I want a room where everything is white and I can go crazy and paint everything.  Actually, what I’d really like is one of those rooms that you can break everything in sight.  That would be a major stress reliever!  Who needs a drink?
