Download: Pinup Saints - Warning: Will Cause Brain Whiplash

So right now people’s (and by people, I mean the internet) attention has been stolen by some unexplainable events. But when you can rip your focus from Keenan, Youtube, 50 Cent, and Chelsea Handler Lately let’s focus on what is really important here. Pinup Saints are blow-your-socks-off material. You will DEFINITELY not have socks.  What’s more important then finding great music, is that this music is free.

Pinup Saints at first might seem like your average pop band, but they have something else that other up-and-comings don’t. Maybe you can figure out what’s so special. Just listen to Like the 1st Time. This Canadian electronic/pop duo (Wynn Holmes and RaRa) have the male/female vocals that not enough musical groups have these days. Do you know what I mean? No, you don’t.

In short: shut up and listen to their music. I’m not entirely sure if their recent retweet of Kanye West was a sarcastic joke or ‘other’. I think retweeting sucks, maybe cause I never get retweeted. But that’s the downfall of not being cool. But regardless, you should still have a listen and download. Download EVERYTHING HERE.  AND HERE!

For fans of: Van Go Lion, Depeche Mode & Brain Whiplash

Ólafur Arnalds is the most.

In a world where gibberish is an acceptable form of lyrics, it’s satisfying to know that there are some musicians out there that have given up complete hope for them and left it as an instrumental. Maybe that isn’t the plan behind Ólafur Arnalds’ brilliant compositions, but hey, who knows? Am I right? I’m right.

Anywho, Ólafur Arnalds has really got something going on here. He’s from Iceland, so you know he’s crazy in a good way. He has a chamber orchestra feel with hints of electronica and some pop-driven elements. It’s really like nothing else I’ve ever heard before, I’m sure you’ll feel the same. He gained a larger following when he opened up for Sigur Rós, so hopefully his eery/beautiful music will fill up more ears. He also did a cover of a Death Cab for Cutie song which is unbelievable.

I love his website, because it’s so engaging (check out the Myspace too). He has a video log and interactive tour dates (where you can leave your comments and pictures, you know, cool stuff). There are a few music videos up there too, but I only wanted to post one, so I chose one of my favorite song’s video “3055”. Also below is my MOST favorite song 0040.

So if you are listening Ólafur, just know that you are the most. And please come to NYC.

P.S. - He released his newest album “…And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness” and it’s really a testament to his talent.

William Fitzsimmons is the most.

Let me just start out by saying John Mayer is the worst. I think it goes without saying that this is a well known fact. Yeah his music is cute, and he dates celebrities. But you can’t hide his self-satisfied smug garbage behind a box with strings tied to it (A.K.A. a guitar).

Anyway, when I play William Fitzsimmons I do not think of John Mayer. Others have tried to compare the two, but halfway before these people finish that sentence, I either throw them off a roof, or hang up the phone. It’s just not an accurate comparison.  It’s like comparing apples and oranges, or grapples to grapes, or coffee to energy drinks, or energy drinks to sleeping. I’m just never going to agree with you. Especially hyped up on all this sugar.

This article is getting a little too crass and slap-stick for how serious and beautiful Senor Fitzsimmons’ music is. My current iTunes play count is nearing 300 for So This is Goodbye (Pink Ganter Remix). It’s just so soothing. Generally speaking he is acoustic/folk type of music, but sometimes there are subtle electronic notes to his songs (such as one below).

Oh by the way, he was born to two blind parents, so they kept all sorts of instruments in the house, which is why he is as talented and interesting as he is, and also why I would want to meet him. FYI.

William, if you are reading this, just know that you are the most. And also come to New York.
Here is my favorite, which is more electronic than his usual songs.

Here is something more typical of him. Just beautiful.

Oh Billy, come to New York so I can see you.

Introducing: The Rescues

I’ve been listening to these guys for a while now, and by a while I mean 4ish months. And by that I mean Since mid-July. The Rescues have somewhat of a timeless sound that I can’t even begin to describe.

In my time I’ve been listening to them, I’ve been trying to come up with a way to best describe them. But I’ve never been good at describing anything. Like that time I was wearing socks then went halfway up my thigh (now, haha), and thought they were stockings at first, but I convinced myself otherwise, because of how comfortable they were so I could keep wearing them. The point is that they have a unique sound.

There are so many things that I love about them and I wish I could make an impossibly long list for you to ignore, but instead I’ll just point out the highlights. There are four members in the band (in the picture above from left to right: Adrianne Gonzalez, Rob Giles, Kyler England, and Gabriel Mann) who all sing and all play instruments. This is one of my favorite elements of these guys, they have 4 different vocal talents harmonizing in almost every song. It’s a soundgasm if I’ve ever heard one. Another part of The Rescues that earns major thumbs up is that the lyrics are absolutely epic. “The sky fell down a star shattered highway, I heard the wind inside me crying” (lyrics from Follow Me Back Into the Sun). All of these fantastic things aside, they are GOING TO BE IN NYC IN NOVEMBER, SO GET YOUR TICKETS. The only thing that will stop me from going is my own untimely death.

The Rescues’ full-length debut album Let Loose the Horse combines intelligent, emotion, and spirit into an album you’ll listen to till the end of time.

Here is my favorite track Follow Me Back Into the Sun and the video for the album’s title track Let Loose the Horses.

Introducing: Blue Sky Black Death

Sometimes in the world, you can’t always get what you want, this lady knows what I’m talkin about! Anyway, the point is life isn’t fair. On the flip-side of that, sometimes you get exactly what you want! I nearly lost my shit when I first listened to Blue Sky Black Death, a San Francisco-based electronic/instrumental duo (Kingston and Young God). I’ve had their newest release Third Party for about a week now, and they are already an installation in my permanent rotation.

Granted, I don’t quite understand the lyrics to the fullest extent - Your common cold is my Trojan horse to feed - (?!) (From Carl Sagan, Track 1). Don’t try Googling that btw, you’ll just be annoyed at how the internet can’t keep up with your underground interest in music. Why are you so behind Google?!?! WHY!!?

::ahem::

Back to BSBD. Blue Sky Black Death’s unique sound is like if you take the bizarreness out of Bjork’s calmer songs, and mixed it with relaxing smooth melodies of Animal Collective. Mix that in with occasional eery vocals and ponderous lyrics (some songs are solely instrumental, and sometimes we don’t know what the instrument is to begin with). The band’s history is almost exclusively abstract hip-hop, but this album is a synth-pop dream.

BSBD is signed to Fake Four Inc., so back off blood-sucking record labels trying to steal someone else’s candy, just ask this maniac. No, don’t he’s a psycho, in a Joaquin Phoenix sort of way. So give them a listen. Below is my personal favorite Institution (Track 5), and the music video & free download for Carl Sagan (Track 1).

Download/Introducing Alex Kemp!

How can it be bad if we both feel good? That’s right sir, you tell it. I love a good constant beat that drives a great song. Alex Kemp keeps the beat going with the his new EP Rat D’hotel - Part II - Rat Hears Love Through Thin Walls.  Kemp moved from New York to Rhode Island to for the band Small Factory back in ‘91, then later on in his career formed the bands Godrays and Assassins.

It’s really refreshing to see such thoughtful lyrics that come from the heart. Don’t close your eyes, don’t hide within….. don’t build the bomb that blows us away (Song: Better Yet). All I’m saying is that radioactive-acid-fueled-garbage-pop songs can be catchy as SHIT, but it’s hard to appreciate them when you randomly sing/blurt out In the morning buy me eggs completely out of any sort of breakfast context. And I don’t mess around with breakfast.

I always manage to get off topic. I never seem to be able to focus. My two favorite songs are Better Yet and Heart Goes Boom. They both have similar key elements that keep it interesting, yet they present different characteristics that display Kemp’s diversity and range, while simultaneously distinguishing and defining his own unique sound.

Kemp plans to release a total of 4 EP’s. The first one is available on iTunes now (Rat d’hôtel, Pt. 1 - Rat Walks Into a Bar), and the SECOND RELEASE CAME OUT TODAY! Get your $3.96 out of your piggy bank and spoil yourself rotten! ROTTEN! You won’t regret it. Out of all the weird things you spend your money on, you won’t regret this.

Listen below to Better Yet, watch the Heart Goes Boom official video, and/or download Heart Goes Boom FOR FREE! So many choices!

Word. Don’t you just love free sound?

Download: The Common Grackle should be more common.

Introducing Common Grackle! The bold and adventurous Canadian duo Gregory Pepper and Factor! Common Grackle adds in sounds from different categories, such indie rock and hip-hop, creating their own unique sound that avoids being cornered by the word genre. They are under the Fake Four Inc. Record label currently.

The Great Depression, Common Grackle’s newest release, has put a face to what I imagine indie music to be today. Their sound ranges from something I’d listen to while gazing at clouds at (All The Pawns, Track 4), to something I’d listen to while sitting back drinking beers with friends (Magic Beans Featuring Ceschi, Track 10).

The slow-to-medium pace of the beat, and the sarcastic tone of the lyrics —Never gonna Twitter about it! — give the songs an addictive quality. Not as addicting as Dance Dance Revolution or heroine (if you’re into that sort of lame thing), but enough that you’ll fill up a good amount of you’re day blasting them from your Honda Eclipse or Razor scooter.

Here’s my favorite track All The Pawns and the video for their album-title track The Great Depression (and a Free Download) again featuring the talented Ceschi.

Cover: Postal Service does Phil Collins

Now, I know what you’re thinking. What the eff does an ouroboros have to do with pop culture? And why were shots of Wicker Park chosen to articulate this song?

The same way if you leave the daddy hamster in the cage after the kids are born, it eats them and turns it into something else! Time for a new cage! Except in the case, the results are AMAZING. Here’s The Postal Service regurgitating Phil Collins’ Against All Odds after eating ever delicious bite of it.
