A friend of mine informed me of another time Jennifer Hudson sang the Dolly Parton written I Will Always Love You, back in 2010 BET Awards honoring the great Ms. Houston.  This is what we could have heard last night, had the producers of the Grammys not given Chris Brown two slots in the lineup.  Clearly by the interaction of the two in this video, Jennifer had Whitney’s approval to tribute her.

Whitney, we love you.

And the performance of the night goes to….. Jennifer Hudson.  Simply perfect.

Congratulations Adele for winning SIX Grammys!  Music wins!

My only question is: why the hell did Chris Brown perform twice & Whitney Houston only receive half-of-a-song tribute?

Grammys 2011: Cliffs Notes Version 1.0

And now, for my thoughts on last nights biggest award night in music:

  1. Sara Bareilles, Rihanna, Jewel, Jennifer Hudson & Katy Perry all looked beautiful last night.
  2. Lady Gaga- an egg? Seriously? No seriously!  WTF.  Over it.  As a gay man myself, I don’t want your “gay anthem.”  I seriously can’t even talk about her “hair whipping back and forth” on the stage (all she needed was Madonna’s matching spiral tits).  And then thanking WHITNEY HOUSTON for Born This Way??  I just can’t.
  3. The Aretha Franklin Tribute was the best performance of the night - and really set the standard high for everyone that followed it.  Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams and Florence Welch all shined.  And Christina’s performance was beyond incredible.  Shame on her haters for missing the point today and only speaking about her fall last night.  Did anyone even see it?  I didn’t.  They obviously missed the point.
  4. I will admit: I’ve never been a fan of Justin Bieber.  And last night just reaffirmed my disliking for him.  His performance was weak, mediocre at best, and the sing-a-long with Jaden Smith was ridiculous (as was Willow Smith’s statement on the E! red carpet “It makes me happy knowing that my song is changing people’s lives.”)  And then Usher joining him?  Usher, what the hell happened to you?  There was a day you used to be a great live performer.  Oh wait, you must have lip-synced then.  Go back to that.  Awful, just awful.
  5. Bruno Mars & Janelle Monae - I have nothing but love for you both.  Your performances last night were truly great. Bruno, you re-worked your song Grenade in a beautiful & soulful way.  And Janelle?  You finally got the resignation you are so deserving of!
  6. Lady Antebellum sounded amazing (as usual) and deserved every award they received last night.
  7. Miranda Lambert? Not so much.
  8. Cee-Lo Green gave us a memorable performance dressed like an Elton John Peacock and singing Forget You.  Totally fun - except for Gwyneth’s awkward dance moves and nearly falling off the piano and breaking her neck (break a neck off a table).
  9. Katy Perry actually sounded good.  Though the video footage of her wedding was a tad self-involved, it was also sweet and cute during her performance of Not Like the Movies.  So happy she didn’t perform Firework.
  10. Rihanna’s performance w/ Drake (who I can’t stand) was really great.  She’s definitely improved as a live singer.  Her outfit also shows us she is embracing her Barbadian background.
  11. Eminem, Rihanna, Dr. Dre and Skylar Grey break it down with Love the Way You Lie Pt. 2 and I Need A Doctor.  Skylar, you’re talented girl - go solo already!
  12. Best New Artist: Esperanza Spalding (who?).  The Grammys give out their first Best New Artist to a Jazz performer.  I like me some jazz but I do think Florence and the Machine was worthy of this award.  Justin Bieber: take a lesson - don’t close your eyes when they are about to announce the winner.  You only look like a fool (or maybe a baby doll).  Honestly glad he didn’t win.
  13. Mick Jagger - good performance.  Bob Dylan? Ouch.  Barbara Streisand?  Rough beginning but you nailed it as you continued.  Still don’t understand why she’s a gay icon though.
  14. Arcade Fire?  Yes I actually know who you are.  Congrats on the win.  You are hard working and can fill MSG.  However, Eminem and Katy Perry both put out better albums last year.  Just sayin’.
  15. Fact: The Grammys were 3.5 hours long last night.  They gave out a total of 109 award.  They only telecasted TEN.  Just sayin’.
  16. Robyn was robbed of the Best Dance Song of 2010.  Just sayin’.
  17. Did you know Pink went home with a Grammy?  As did Seal, India Arie and Herbie Hancock?  Thanks to the Imagine Project Herbie put out last year, a beautiful rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine became a Grammy winner.

Reliving a moment

The music industry suffered a tragic loss when news broke out on Christmas morning that The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, died of complications of pneumonia. The industry knew they had to pay tribute to him in a very big way but who they would ask to pay tribute to the legend himself was on everyone’s mind. Well, none other than Christina Aguilera was asked to step up to the plate and I must say, she hit a grand slam with her performance.

In a music world that feels it’s been dominated by auto-tune lately, it’s hard for some people to really recognize soul anymore. But nonetheless, her performance received great recognition and was voted in the Grammy books as the 3rd best performance of all time. ALL TIME! To sum up her performance I’ll quote an ad that I saw for the Grammy’s the following year: Thank you, Christina, for reintroducing our jaws to the floor.
