If you put out an album, and it goes unnoticed, it’s time to collaborate with a star who is highly recognized. Jon McLaughlin has teamed up with Sara Barellies for a re-release of Summer Is Over - which will be included on his new album due out in May of this year. One of my favorite tracks from Forever If Ever, Summer Is Over is now 10 times more emotional with Sara’s added vocals. Cannot wait to see the video for this one…. to beautiful, piano singer-songwriters! Here’s to hoping it is successful as a winter single!
Gavin Beach is a reminder as to why why I love music. It’s heartfelt. It’s emotional. It’s talent. Gavin possesses all of these qualities in a fine musician and it’s about time this guy gets discovered. Every cover song he has done of Adele, Robyn, Michael Jackson and Jessie J are phenomenal. They will have you mesmerized by his voice. And have you in puddle of tears on the floor with his touching renditions, along with his talented friend Jamie Cleaton. Gavin has been kind enough to let his fans download these 6 covers, for free. Help spread the word of this yet-to-be-discovered singer by sharing this EP with your friends and family. And follow Gavin Beach on Facebook and Twitter.
I can’t live without music in general therefore there are so many albums that I would classify as ones I Can’t Live Without. One that immediately comes to mind would have to be Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan. This is the quintessential, melancholy, rainy day album. However to me, it defines a period in my life where I struggled with the fact that I was painfully shy and introverted. This was the first album that I ever bought that effected me profoundly on such a deep level.
I remember when I first heard the song Possession on the radio- I couldn’t believe how pure and honest her voice was. Beyond Possession, the whole album really spoke to me. There was one song in particular on that album titled Elsewhere that was the definition of my life. There is a verse, The quiet child awaits that day when she can break free of the mold that clings like desperation. That quiet child was (and still is for the most part) ME. I can recall sitting in my room for hours with that album playing on my Aiwa Boomboxand trying to learn every song on my flute. I wanted to be able to sing like her, with the tonality that she had and the ease of which she could switch from a chest voice to a falsetto….I still wish I could sing like that….but I thought that if I couldn’t do that, I would sing through my flute.
As embarrassing as this all is, I really feel it was the first album that shaped my current taste in music. To this day, when I put on that album, I completely become that same person that I was….sitting in my room, in my McLachlan-esque world. Oh, and if you want to hear some insane vocal range, listen to Fear below….amazing!
Tori Amos has transformed herself over the years but she has always been consistent as an incredible lyricist, singer and piano player. I feel in love with her the moment I heard “Pretty Good Year.” Though over the years, she has released some incredible stuff, I cannot help but go back to her sophomore release of “Under the Pink.” The mixture of Sarah McLachlan’s sweetness with Nirvana’s grunge makes me want to throw on my flannel shirt from the Sadie Hawkins dance and grow out my hair. 1994 was a pretty damn good year. This is an album you cannot live without!
